Description
I was encouraged to write this book by Al Purdy. In a letter, he said, “I would like to see an iconoclastic book of your criticism come out. That stuff is one of your fortes, to pick out writing that is either over-praised or neglected, of course I personally, I hasten to add, an neglected), and give your own slant on this stuff.
So this book is for Purdy as well as anyone inclined to buy (or find it) and read it. There will be another collection of reviews and comments, ones that do not mock. Note that Purdy in his letter indicated a friendlier role for me as a critic: I was to promote the neglected who, as Purdy slyly indicated in connection with himself, may include even the greatest and most successful of writers.
